Seoul Town Tapas @ Breadbar on West Third

The wife and I went to dinner at Breadbar on West Third to try Chef Debbie Lee's Seoul Town Tapas, a pop-up concept restaurant with a twist on Korean Pub food. She was also a finalist for Food Networks "The Next Food Network Star" (season 5). Hadn't really heard anything about how her food/concept was being received (good or bad). Considering Breadbar is one of our favorite places in general, figure we can never go wrong.

Upon seating, for your pre-meal appetizer, they give you kimchee daikon radishes which were quite tasty and not too spicy.

For our first appetizer we had the Chips and Curry Bean Dip, which was really good, the chips were made from wontons, light and crispy. The bean dip had fairly smooth texture to it and the curry was definitely there, but not overkill. A good all around dish between the tastes and textures.

After the dip we had the kimchee citrus pork with roasted fuji apples skewers, which were very tasty and the pork with roasted apple paired nicely, mild but with flavor. Followed by Korean Rice Cylinders with maple smoked bacon and a jalapeno ponzu. Can't really go wrong when bacon is involved, although I didn't really taste much more than the bacon. Both of them had a nice ponzu dipping sauce.

Next, we had the Chicken Meat Balls, which was probably one of our faves. It was almost like sweet and sour chicken in meat ball form with a caramelized outer texture. A little sweet and savory and good all the way around (pun intended).

We then tried the Korean Fried Chicken (dark meat). This was good, not great or exceptional, especially for $16. It didn't seem that different then regular fried chicken. I had heard later that there was a Soy Braised Chicken Breast on the menu that was really great, but it was rotated out for the fried chicken, maybe it will make a come back.

Lastly, for dessert, we tried the Grilled Nutella and Blueberry Sammie. Pan de mie bread grilled with sweet blueberries and Nutella. Simple and great. Uh, yah, yum. My wife hasn't stopped thinking about it either.

Overall, I enjoyed the meal itself, even though I was expecting something a little more exciting (I think Chef Ludo set the bar pretty high for pop-up concepts). The prices were affordable though, the portions were, well, tapas style so it was more then enough for us, but we eat light. We're planning on going back at least one more time. There were plenty of other tasty sounding dishes to try. The pop-up was supposed to end on April 10th, but it was just extended to May 1st. You can find more info about it here.

Casseblanca at Umami

Had intended to check out a relatively new taco bar place, called Candela Taco Bar & Lounge however, they had no hours posted on their website and when we got there, the door was open, lights were on, but there was no one working, at all. There were no customers either, really strange. Will try again some other time. So across the street to Umami we went.

Hadn't gone to Umami in a little while. Tried a new burger, the Casseblanca. Its a lamb and merguez sausage patty with pickled apricots, arugala and a pomegranite aioli. It was pretty good, the sweet tartness of the apricots was really nice against the seasoned lamb. The aioli was really good too. It added its own sweetness to the burger.

LudoBites

Where and how to begin. LudoBites is a pop-up restaurant that had been using the Breadbar space in the evenings for the past three months. By the way, Breadbar, best baguettes and croissants in town. Back to dinner...went three times. It was a dining experience like no other. A culinary adventure. The layering of flavors and textures was amazing. Combine that with the talkative atmosphere and the music, which was rap and hip-hop (Eazy E and Jay Z) the last two times we were there just added to this unique dining experience. Not everything was what it appeared to be. Who knew that a cornichon sorbet (which looked like a real cornichon) in chorizo soup with cantaloupe would pair together in such a phenomenal way. The deconstructed fish and chips was great and fun, putting it all together in one bite. Duck fat fried chicken, yah, awesome. Quite literally everything we ate was followed by oohs and ahhs. We just enjoyed ourselves each and every time. What's great about this type of cooking, it makes eating exciting and fun. Its all new. You leave feeling satisfied and happy. Plus, Chef Ludo made it a point to stop by and thank customers and talk for a bit. Can't wait for his next round of LudoBites and hopefully a permanent location.

Dinner at Tender Greens

Dinner at Tender Greens, originally uploaded by LeandroF.

Dinner at Tender Greens, had my usual, albacore hot plate with yukon mashed potatoes and baby spinach with goat cheese and hazelnuts. We decided to try the soup special, white corn chowder. It was pretty good, had potatoes in it(mashed day old I think). The rest of the meal was great, they were having a bit of an off night though as far getting everything done at the same time. Doesn't happen very often though.

Fried Hominy at Animal Restaurant

Fried hominy with lime, grown up version of corn nuts, but crunchy texture like popcorn shrimp. Very snackable and really good. This was our second time to Animal and service was great, friendly and top notch. We got there right at 6pm when they opened and scored seats at the bar without reservations. The bar seating filled up within 10 minutes.

Grilled albacore tuna (medium rare), yukon mashed potatoes and a baby spinach goat cheese salad. My usual. The food and service tends to be fairly consistent and good. Depending on the time of day, there can be a line, but it does tend to move along pretty fast. Regardless, its always great and the prices are just right.
